Thiery Thompson ‘90
Kiddo has been begging to watch Days of Thunder ever since his mom mentioned it existed. After a solid week of good behavior, we nestled in for a viewing. I haven’t watched this movie in at least a decade. I’d written it off due to frustrations with all the inaccuracies.
But watching it again with fresh eyes, reminded me of the first time I watched this flick with my own dad way back in ‘91. The next day, we departed for our maiden trip to Daytona, where I saw Darrell Waltrip Barrel roll and Bill Elliott win the Pepsi 400. I was hooked.
As the credits rolled, kiddo hopped in the chair with me to declare Days of Thunder his New Favorite Movie. I didn’t tell him how my eyes caught more inaccuracies than ever before, but I forgave the movie for all its faults, as it serves as a decent reminder of what the sport was during that pre-90s boom.
While we sat there in the dark, I told him how I watched the movie with my dad and how we went to Daytona and then I revealed a big secret to him:
At the end of the month, we are headed to Charlotte to have dinner with Richard Petty, Kyle Petty, Bobby Allison, Ned Jarrett, Dale Inman, Dave Marcis, and Leonard Wood. We’ll also pay a visit to Penske Racing and see them prepping the cars for Daytona. He was super pumped (as am I). January is the craziest time of the year at work and I needed something super awesome to look forward to. Dinner with the King should do the trick 🙂
